ENREGISTREMENT DE L'ALBUM du côté de NEW YORK les 27/28 JUIN 2012

La disparition de Paul Motian m'a beaucoup touché... Beaucoup plus que ce à quoi je m'attendais. J'ai découvert que finalement moi qui était persuadé ne pas avoir de "maitre" j'en avais bien un, et de taille ! Ses orientations musicales, son travail d'orfèvre, son art de la suggestion sont pour beaucoup dans ma manière d'aborder le jazz et les musiques improvisée, musiques que je n'aurais sans doute pas abordées avec autant d'enthousiasme sans l'apport d'artistes comme lui.

Paul Motian a disparu au moment où j'étais en train de discuter avec Quinsin Nachoff d'un projet de nouvel album dont l'envie m'avait été déclenchée par l'écoute d'un des trios de Motian avec Joe Lovano. Or ce que j'apprécie chez Quinsin Nachoff, en plus de ses talents de compositeurs, c'est sa maitrise totale du type de son et de jeu de ce dernier dont il a été l'élève, et qui sont à la fois dans la grande radition et très contemporains. Je lui ai donc proposé ce projet avec une plus petite formation que ce nous avions déjà enregistré en 5tet chez Cristal Records, ce qu'il a accepté sans hésitation.

Concernant Russ Lossing c'est un pianiste "extra-ordinaire", dans tous les sens du terme, dont beaucoup des musiciens new yorkais avec lesquels j'ai travaillé (dont Michael Bates et Quinsin Nachoff, mais aussi le tromboniste suisse Samuel Blaser) m'ont parlé et dont je découvre qu'il a enregistré et s'est produit souvent  en trio avec Paul Motian... Beaucoup de coïncidences...

iI ne restait plus qu'à demander à Rémi Gaudillat qui partage la plupart de mes aventures depuis une dizaine d'années et dont j'apprécie également les compositions, d'y participer, ce qu'il a tout de suite accepté avec son enthousiasme habituel .

Cet album sera donc enregistré les 27 et 28 juin 2012 aux studios Tedesco (USA) et ce 4tet pourra être en tournée dès la sortie de ce disque chez IMR, fin 2012 / début 2013

The death of Paul Motian has really touched me ... Much more than what I expected.. I was persuaded not to have a "master" , but I discovered that I had a great one ! His musical direction, his work as a goldsmith, his art of suggestion are for a lot in my approach of jazz and improvised music, musics that I would probably not have played with so much enthusiasm without the works of artists like him.


Paul Motian died at the period  when I was talking with Quinsin Nachoff of a project of new album. I had the idea of this new album  by listening to one of Motian's trios with Joe Lovano. Quinsin Nachoff, who was his student,  fully master his type of incredible sound on the saxophone tenor,  in addition to his talents as a composer.  I have therefore proposed him to record again with me and Rémi (we had already recorded in  5tet) what he accepted without any hesitation.


Russ Lossing  is an "extraordinary" pianist, in every sense of the term ! Many ew York musicians with whom I worked (as Michael Bates or Quinsin Nachoff, but also the Swiss trombonist Samuel Blaser) had spoken of him  to me and I discovered he has recorded and performed often in a trio with Paul Motian ... Many coincidences !

It only remained for me to ask Remi Gaudillat, that shares most of my adventures since ten years, to participate as an instrumentist and as a composer I like very much, what he readily agreed with his usual enthusiasm.

This album will be recorded on 27 and 28 June 2012 at Tedesco Studios (United States) and will release on IMR label, the 4tet wiould be on tour late 2012, early 2013
